Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has broken the record for the longest-serving Chief Minister of the state. ND Tiwari was the first Chief Minister of Uttarakhand to complete a full five-year term. Now, Pushkar Singh Dhami has broken the record for the longest-serving Chief Minister of Uttarakhand. Narayan Dutt Tiwari served as Chief Minister for 1,831 days. CM Dhami’s tenure has now reached 1,832 days today, Friday, July 10.
ND Tiwari became the first elected Chief Minister of Uttarakhand on March 2, 2002. His tenure as Acting Chief Minister lasted for 1,831 days until March 7, 2007. Pushkar Singh Dhami became Chief Minister of Uttarakhand on July 4, 2021. With the 2022 assembly elections approaching, the BJP reappointed him as Chief Minister. He has held the position ever since. Today, he has completed 1,832 days as Chief Minister.
It is being reported that Dhami has set two new records in just five days. On July 4th, Dhami became the first BJP Chief Minister to complete a five-year term and has now broken Narayan Dutt Tiwari’s record for the longest tenure as Chief Minister.
The Congress party has given Uttarakhand three Chief Ministers so far: ND Tiwari, Vijay Bahuguna, and Harish Rawat. Of these three Chief Ministers, only Narayan Dutt Tiwari completed his five-year term. Vijay Bahuguna and Harish Rawat also served as Chief Ministers during the same term of the Congress government.
The BJP has given Uttarakhand seven Chief Ministers so far, including Nityanand Swami, the first Chief Minister after the formation of the state, Bhagat Singh Koshyari, Bhuvan Chandra Khanduri, Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, Trivendra Singh Rawat, Tirath Singh Rawat, and Pushkar Singh Dhami. Bhuvan Chandra Khanduri served as Chief Minister twice. Pushkar Singh Dhami has also been sworn in as Chief Minister twice.
Speaking of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, he began his political career with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). During his student days at Lucknow University, Dhami served as the ABVP’s Uttar Pradesh State General Secretary. During his tenure, he organized a large and successful ABVP convention. After the formation of Uttarakhand, Pushkar Singh Dhami also served as the BJP Yuva Morcha State President twice.
In 2012, the BJP fielded him for the first time in the legislative assembly, and Dhami won the Khatima seat. He also won the Khatima seat in 2017. In 2021, he was appointed Chief Minister after Tirath Singh Rawat stepped down. He lost to Bhuvan Kapri of the Congress in the 2022 elections. However, the BJP still retained Dhami as Chief Minister, and Dhami returned to the Assembly by contesting the Champawat by-election.
